History suggests that teams down 1–3 also face long odds of winning. Only about one-in-nine teams facing that situation have come back to win. The five teams that did manage to come back from 1–3 are the Pirates (twice) in 1925 and 1979, the Yankees in 1958, the Tigers in 1968, and the Royals in 1985. https://gnduplacements.org/ Interestingly, the chances of winning when ahead or behind 3–2 are almost the same as the chances of winning when ahead or behind 2–1. Teams with a 3–2 lead win about two-thirds of the time and teams down 2–3 win about one-third of the time.
This suggests that the teams that compete in the World Series are usually evenly matched. But there have been more sweeps (12.5 percent of 105 is about 13, so we would have expected to see 13 World Series end in sweeps rather than the 21 sweeps that have actually occurred), fewer 3–1 Series, and fewer six-game Series than theoretically should have occurred between evenly matched teams. These anomalous results are all related. The increased number of sweeps has resulted in fewer six-game Series. Why are there so many sweeps if the teams are evenly matched? The most likely explanation is psychological. Teams that fall behind 3–0 know their chances of winning are small and play the fourth game accordingly. This also accounts for the shortage of 3–1 Series.
The purpose of this article is to examine the probabilities of winning the World Series for all possible game combinations. For example, what is the actual probability of winning if you fall behind 0–1 as St. Louis did, or 1–2 as Boston did? What if you’re ahead or behind two games to none?

NEW YORK — Assuming the voting results for the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani and the Yankees’ Aaron Judge go as we expect them to go (hint: they will), this is only the seventh World Series to feature that season’s two MVPs.
Game 4 world series
Of the 41 teams to fall behind 3-0 in a best-of-seven postseason series, the Yankees are only the 10th to even avoid a sweep. Of the previous nine to do so, four managed to force a Game 6 and two forced a Game 7, although none of those occurred in the World Series.
• The Dodgers and Yankees had a World Series preview June 7-9 at Yankee Stadium, with Los Angeles winning two of the three games. Teoscar Hernández had a go-ahead, two-run double in the 11th inning of the first game, a 2-1 Dodgers win, then hit two homers in an 11-3 rout the next night. The Yanks salvaged the finale with a 6-4 win, powered by Trent Grisham’s three-run homer off Tyler Glasnow.
Because Tuesday’s bullpen game went sideways so early, with Daniel Hudson serving up a grand slam in the third inning, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was able to give the rest of his “A” bullpen the night off. That’s a luxury the Yankees have not had. The Dodgers will have the more rested bullpen in Game 5.
Yankees: Soto reached base twice in Game 4, working a walk and knocking a double, and he leads the Yankees with a 1.015 OPS during the World Series. Rizzo has a .412 on-base percentage in this Fall Classic, with two hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches. Perhaps Judge’s eighth-inning RBI single, his first World Series RBI, sparks the captain’s bat. He’s 2-for-15 in the Series.
Not only did New York avoid a sweep, its ace awaits: Cole will start Game 5 after an excellent showing in Game 1 that was spoiled by Freeman’s walk-off grand slam. He’ll face Jack Flaherty, as the Dodgers get back to their rotation after their attempt at winning the World Series with a bullpen game Tuesday went awry.
Game 4 started with a familiar sight in this World Series: Freddie Freeman hitting a home run to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a lead. But this time, the Yankees had an answer in the form of Anthony Volpe’s third-inning grand slam that sparked an 11-4 victory and cut New York’s series deficit to 3-1.
