World series 2024 game 5
“We have just got to stay focused, stay urgent,” Roberts said postgame of his team’s World Series chances. “Offensively, to be quite honest, we left a lot of runs out there tonight and still found a way win a ball game. https://fourforksduluth.com/ There’s got to be urgency. I don’t want to let these guys up for air.”

Righthander Aaron Combs, one of Tennessee’s most trusted relievers, probably won’t be available after throwing 63 pitches on Sunday (though he told Vitello that he’d be able to go Monday). But Tennessee will have righthander Nate Snead, who threw 15 pitches to close Sunday’s victory. Veteran lefthander Kirby Connell is also always available.
Game 4 world series 2024
The two starters, Flaherty and Cole, kept the game scoreless through the first four innings. After Enrique Hernández hit a triple in the bottom of the fifth inning, he scored the game’s first run via a sacrifice fly by Will Smith. In the top of the sixth, Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run home run after a Juan Soto walk, giving the Yankees a 2–1 lead and knocking Flaherty out of the game. Cole was removed from the game after giving up a leadoff single to Teoscar Hernández in the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, Shohei Ohtani hit a ball off the top of the outfield wall and reached second base, but Juan Soto’s throw got away from second baseman Gleyber Torres, and Ohtani advanced to third base. The next batter, Mookie Betts, hit a sacrifice fly to score Ohtani and tie the game.
That’s how it remained until Wells sent a Landon Knack fastball over the right-field wall for a sixth-inning solo shot. And in the eighth, against Brent Honeywell, the Yankees got a lot more insurance when, with two runners in scoring position, Verdugo grounded to second, where Gavin Lux’s throw home was not in time to retire the streaking, sliding Volpe. Torres then stepped up and smacked a three-run shot to right-center, and, after a Juan Soto double, the slumping Judge got the lift he needed when he lined an RBI single to left.
No, that wasn’t a replay. Freddie Freeman had no extra-base hits, just one run scored and one RBI in the first two rounds of the postseason. He was too hobbled from his ankle sprain to play in the Dodgers’ deciding Game 6 of the NLCS, and there were questions whether his valiant effort to be in the lineup — despite his obvious pain, and despite how much it seemed to be a galvanizing force for his teammates, who admired the daily efforts it took for him to get on the field — was doing more harm than good.

• 11 runs were the Yankees’ most in a World Series game since 1978 Game 5 (12). They played 48 World Series games in between. Only 10 MLB franchises have even played 48 World Series games total. It was also the second-most runs in a game facing elimination in Yankees postseason history. They scored 12 in Game 6 in 1960.
World series game 6
For the first time since 2019, the World Series averaged fewer viewers than the NBA Finals (12.4M) — which after airing out-of-schedule the prior two years returned to its normal June date this season. The World Series has only beaten the NBA Finals four times in the past 15 seasons, 2009 (Yankees won), 2016 (Cubs won) and the two years the NBA was out-of-season. It is of course worth noting that the NBA Finals does not face football competition (except in the record-low edition two years ago).
“Goodbye! Oh, what a blow! What a way to top it off!” Cosell yelled as the ball bounced off the black-painted batter’s eye and into a fan’s waiting hands. “Forget about who the Most Valuable Player is in the World Series. How this man has responded to pressure.”
The Dodgers wanted to recapture the comradery they felt when they won the championship at the end of the COVID-19-shortened season of 2020, while quarantined in a hotel for three weeks. The off time was their opportunity. They spent at least eight hours together at the ballpark every day, even when they weren’t working out. They watched the other playoff games. They ate. They talked. They set a tone.
The Dodgers and Yankees have met in the World Series 12 times, tying the NBA’s Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers for the most common championship-round matchup in all the major professional sports. They last met in 1981, a series the Dodgers won; the Yankees won when they met in 1977 and ’78. Before that — before the Dodgers left Brooklyn and traveled West in the late 1950s — they spent decades sharing New York City.
