Although Ohtani could not pitch in 2024 due to elbow surgery, he was tremendously successful as a batter and baserunner. Playing at designated hitter, Ohtani became the first player in MLB history to break the 50 home runs, 50 stolen bases barrier in a single season. The Yankees will send rookie Luis Gil to the mound in Game 4 to try extending their season. They elected not to pitch Gerrit Cole on short rest. Gil had a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts, which will likely earn him American League Rookie of the Year honors. In his only postseason start, he threw four innings in Game 4 of the ALCS against Cleveland, allowing two runs over four innings.
Another run came in the third, when NLCS MVP Tommy Edman drew a walk, advanced to second on an Ohtani groundout and then made a great read on Mookie Betts’ opposite-field single to right to motor home and make it 3-0. The Dodgers could have broken the game open that inning after they loaded the bases and compelled Boone to go to his bullpen by bringing in Mark Leiter Jr. with two outs. But Will Smith grounded out to end the threat.
• Freddie Freeman entered having homered in each game of the series and wasted no time adding Game 3 to the list, going yard in the first. He became just the third player to homer in Games 1, 2 and 3 of a World Series, joining 2002 Barry Bonds (Giants) and 1958 Hank Bauer (Yankees). Nobody has done so in the first four. The only player to homer in four straight games within a single World Series is George Springer, in 2017 Games 4-7.
Buehler, coming off the worst regular season of his career, has now pitched 12 consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason. He pitched five scoreless innings on just 76 pitches in Game 3, and the Dodgers bullpen was one out away from completing the shutout when Alex Verdugo hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth. The only other time the Yankees threatened to score, Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernández threw out Giancarlo Stanton at the plate. Dodgers starters Jack Flaherty, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Buehler have combined for a 1.62 ERA across 16 2/3 innings.
